Sept. '07: Attending Dental School at U.T.  May 2007:  Brian received the 2007 Biology Faculty Award (presented at Graduation, May 2007).  April 2007:  Brian received the Award for best poster in MOLECULAR BIOLOGY at the 2007 CBU Student Research Poster Session.  (His poster was "The Effect of Carbon Nanofibers on NIH 3T3 Fibroblast Proliferation" by Brian Kim, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, and Eldon Geisert. )

Kyle Markway (NSCI) April '07: Accepted to the DPT (Doctorate in Physical Therapy) program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Memphis.
Sheharyar Minhas Jan '08:  A photo from the Whitecoat ceremony.  Sheharyar writes, " As far as program is concerned.... you get to study a year in UK before doing your rotations anywhere you want in States or sccredited hospital around the world (for free electives). Since it's an acclerated program the classes are from 9:00am-5:00pm and then of course you have late night studying. Besides US medical ethics, biochemistry, and gross anatomy n embryology (and lab), we also have histology n cell biology (n lab) for the first semester. I am glad I had histology at CBU. It helped me so much that I would be struggling if I didn't had it before."  Jan. '08:  Accepted to the St. George's University School of Medicine Global Scholars Program in Newcastle, United Kingdom.  March '07:  Received a statewide second-place award in the Cell and Molecular Oral Presentation section at the Tennessee Academy of Science (TAS) meeting at Austin Peay University.  He was awarded a one-year membership to TAS and his research was published in the online TAS Journal.  Nov. '06:  Awarded a second place prize for his paper,  "Incorporation of HA into H5N1 vaccine virus is independent of M1 gene origin" in the cell and molecular biology section of the state-wide Tennessee Academy of Science at Austin Peay State University (photo1photo2photo3).
Patton Minkin (Chem) April '07: Accepted to the DDS program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry.
Sana Mujahid Mar. '08:  Co-authored a publication accepted in J. Biol. Chem. (from her CBU senior biology research at U.T.).  Mar. '07:  Sana has accepted to the Integrated Studies Ph.D. Program (ISP) in the Sackler School of Gradute Biomedical Sciences at Tufts University in Boston.  Nov. '06:  Sana presented a paper on "Characterization of the lysophophatidic acid 3 receptor via computationally-guided site-specific mutagenesis" in the cell and molecular biology section of the Tennessee Academy of Science at Austin Peay State University (photo1photo2photo3).  Summer '06:  Received a summer fellowship from the Summer Research Scholars Program at the University of Tennessee, where she conducted research with Dr. Gabor Tigyi in the Department of Physiology.

Jennifer Bernard March '07:  Jenny is one of the featured alums in the March issue of the CBU SOS Newsletter.  Jenny reports, "I'm going to Pretoria, South Africa this summer to work on a coronavirus project in cheetahs.  It's all labwork, but we'll get to travel while we're there.  It's through UT and we'll be there for about 6 weeks and then travel a couple weeks."  Fall '06:  Attending UT School of Veterinary Medicine, Knoxville.  Summer '06:  summer position looking at black bear home ranges. June '06:  Lady Buccaneer shortstop was named first team Academic All-District and second team Academic All-American ESPN Magazine and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). To qualify for the honor, a player must have a cumulative 3.20 grade point average and be a starter in their particular sport. Bernard's name will now appear on the national ballot for All-American possibilities.  Apr. '06:  Accepted to University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, Knoxville.  Feb. Sally Lynch (NSCI) Sally is spent a semester of 2005 in Edge Hill College in Lancashire, England.  You can read reports about her experiences and see some photos.  In 2004, Sally studied maned wolves in Brazil through CBU's MHIRT program.

Garrett Smithson (NSCI)  Garrett and Kristen Bach (Rhodes ‘05) were married on July 16 at St. William Church in Millington, TN. Garrett recently finished his final coursework during the June Summer semester and will graduate in August '05. Kristen was recently assigned to Collierville High School where she will teach Spanish I.

Stacey Bourg  Mar. '07:  Currently M-4 at Lousiana State University at Shreveport, Stacey has been matched to Geisinger Health/Janet Weis Children's Hospital in Danville, PA for pediatrics.  Sept. '05:  Stacy worked in a Shreveport medical clinic established in one of the three post-hurricane shelters. Her parents evacuated but their housey, 25 miles house north of New Orleans proper, suffered extensive damage.  July '05:  Report on travelling to and practicing medicine in Manali, India (from Caduceus).  Aug. Nick Newsom Mar. '07: "Aloha!  How's everything at CBU and Memphis?  I'm just thrilled to share a good news-- I'll be doing Neurology residency at UC-Davis (my 1st choice) and internship at Univ of Utah.  Believe me or not, the fact that I did my undergrad at CBU added extra flavor on my residency application.  I was amazed how interested my interviewers were to know more about CBU.  It was almost always brought up.  And of course, all I could say was how supportive the faculty members were, how advantageous it was to have small classes, and the great diversity of cultures and backgrounds."

The paper, “Immunohistochemical localization of DARP32 in striatal projection neurons and striatal interneurons in pigeons,” was written and researched with Dr. Anton Reiner and Loreta Medina.

Felix Vazquez-Chona, Ph.D. 1 Dec '05 Felix is defended his dissertation for the Ph.D. in Anatomy and Neurobiology at U.T., "Genetic networks modulating retinal injury." His dissertation research grew out of his CBU biology senior research.   Oct. '04: Felix Vazquez-Chona and Sara Elizabeth Robertson married on December 8, 2004 in Paris TN.  Felix graduated from CBU in 1998, traveled the Appalachian Trail, taught at Catholic High School, and then entered graduate school at UT.  He is currently working with Dr. Eldon Geisert, his senior thesis mentor, on his PhD.  Nov. '03: grad school in Anatomy at UT.  May '03: Felix is working on his Ph.D. at UT Memphis.  He is a co-author on a poster for ARVO, "The control of Gene Expression Following Injury in the Rat Retina: QTL and PCA"  E.E.
