Course Description:  This course is designed to prepare students for Chemistry
113.  It provides an introduction to elements and their symbols, names and
formulas of compounds, valences, balancing chemical equations, chemical
reactions, stoichiometry, and the algebra required for proficiency in chemistry.
Chemistry 101 does not supply any portion of the science credits required in any
CBU degree program; however, it does count as an elective in some programs.

Prerequisite or Corequisite:  Math 101

Required Texts and Materials:

    1.  Introductory Chemistry: A Foundation, Sixth Edition,
               by S.S. Zumdahl and D.J. DeCoste, Houghton Mifflin Company, 2008.

    2. Scientific calculator.

General Course Goals:  The course is designed to:

    1)  Introduce students to the basic principles and terminology of
    chemistry and prepare students for college-level chemistry;

    2)  Familiarize students with selected applications of scientific
    laws;

    3)  Review important algebraic concepts and introduce the use of
    these concepts in chemistry.

Attendance:  Regular class attendance is expected.

Assignments:  You are expected to read textbook chapters listed on the syllabus
prior to coming to class.  You are responsible for learning all material that is
either presented or assigned during class lecture/demonstrations.  In addition,
you will be responsible for all assigned questions and problems.
