The purpose of the "Powers of Ten" project is to illustrate the many orders of magnitude that are spanned by materials and their physical and chemical properties. A variety of images are being collected as part of this effort to provide you with new perspectives on physical and chemical phenomena, and with an appreciation for the instruments and materials that are pushing the boundaries of science and technology.

View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons.

The site gives "A Sense of Scale".

Using animated graphics we will show the changes in emitted radiation over part of the electromagnetic spectrum as the temperature of a black-body is raised from 500 to 9600 Kelvin.

Computers


Computers

In this look at computers, we will take you through many orders of magnitude of spatial dimensions. We begin outside a 10-story building. We then look at one story of that building. Next we go into a computer lab on that floor and to a computer in that lab. Then we progressively examine parts of the computer and its microprocessor chip at increasing levels of magnification, using various kinds of instrumentation.
