Dear Faculty and program
director,
The 2008 MIT summer research program will take place from June 2 to August 8
and is open to talented and promising sophomores and juniors who have a strong
academic record (GPA of 3.5 or above), a demonstrated interest in
research, and are ready to benefit from an intense research experience at
MIT. This program is specifically designed to encourage students from
disadvantaged backgrounds, from under-represented minority groups, or
first-generation college students, to pursue a Ph.D. degree in the biological
and biomedical sciences.
Last year the program hosted 23 undergraduates from all over the
country. Seventeen of them are in the process of applying to PhD or MD/PhD programs and 10 will be presenting
their work at the ABRCMS in
I would greatly appreciate your assistance with promoting this summer
internship program to your qualified students. I have attached a
flier as well as a complete application (also available as a pdf file on
our website http://mit.edu/biology/www/outreach/summer_research/undergraduates.html
Students accepted into the program are placed in laboratories in biology, chemistry,
brain and cognitive science, bioengineering and in computational and systems
biology, and conduct supervised research in a field of interest to them.
Interested students are welcome to contact me directly by email (. Please fell
free to also encourage students who are in the process of applying to PhD
programs in the biological sciences and are interested in MIT to contact me.
Thank you for your help.
Sincerely,
Mandana Sassanfar, Ph.D.

Greetings from Stanford!
I'd like to encourage you to consider us for graduate school and to apply to
our Stanford Summer Research Program (SSRP)/Amgen Scholars Program.
The SSRP is a fully funded, 8-week residential research program open to current
undergraduate students. It is an advanced scientific research opportunity for
diverse students who want to prepare for and enter PhD, MD/PhD, or MD programs.
Each student is matched with a Stanford faculty member and lab mentor and works
on a research project that is challenging, involves a broad range of research
techniques, and is feasible within the 8-week period. More information about
SSRP can be accessed at http://ssrp.stanford.edu and our application deadline is February 1. Our on-line
application will be available December 21.
Stanford Biosciences is composed of thirteen close knit home programs:
Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Informatics, Biophysics, Cancer
Biology, Chemical and Systems Biology, Developmental Biology, Genetics,
Immunology, Microbiology and Immunology, Molecular and Cellular Physiology,
Neurosciences, and Structural Biology. You can find more information on these
programs at http://med.stanford.edu/phd. I'd also like to encourage you to learn about the faculty
and the research being conducted in those departments by going to http://med.stanford.edu/profiles/
Students pursuing their PhD's at Stanford are fully funded, which includes
tuition, health insurance, and a $28,000 stipend. Currently, there are close
to 500 students enrolled and while external fellowships are welcome and all
Ph.D. students are encouraged to apply for them, they are not required.
One of my favorite things about Stanford is that it is a truly collaborative
university. The Schools of Medicine, Engineering, and Humanities and
Science are all located on the same campus, which facilitates the numerous
interactions between students, faculty, and departments across the university.
The Biosciences programs also offers students the
opportunity to work in the laboratories of any of our 280 faculty members.
Departments within the Biosciences can be found within both the
Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions.

Tri-Institutional Gateways to the Laboratory Summer Program.
I would once
again like to bring your attention to the Gateways
to the Laboratory Summer Program, sponsored by the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering
Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program in
http://grants.nih.gov/training/faq_diversity.htm#a3
The Gateways students experience an
exciting summer as they conduct independent research projects in a lab at one
of our three institutions, while participating in a number of clinical
activities including scrubbing into surgeries. This is a wonderful
opportunity to experience, first hand, life as a physician-scientist.
At the end of the summer, the Gateways students give oral, written and poster
presentations of their research. Last year, we were able to raise funds
to pay for travel and lodging expenses so that each Gateways student could have
at least one family member come, as our guest, to
The Gateways to the Laboratory Program awards a stipend of $4300 and reimburses
the students for their travel expenses. On campus housing is available.
The Gateways to the Laboratory Program started in 1993 as the first summer
program to be run by a MD-PhD Program. A number of our alumni are now
students at some of the top MD-PhD Programs across the country, including our
own Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program. The NIH expressed an interest in
using the Gateways Program as a model for other institutions. Recently,
our program was featured on the NIH web page as a model program with a notable
record of recruitment and retention strategies.
The on-line application will be available at:
http://www.med.cornell.edu/mdphd/summerprogram/application.html
The
application deadline is February 1, 2008 (as
is the deadline for most summer programs). Early completed applications
are strongly encouraged.
Please inform your students of this wonderful opportunity. This program is ideal for those students contemplating the
combined MD-PhD degree.
As always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me.
****Please note, this year, the Gateways to the Laboratory Program is open
to underrepresented minority students AND/OR disadvantaged students. We
use the federal NIH definition of underrepresented minority and/or
disadvantaged:

undergraduates for graduate programs in science, technology, engineering and
math (STEM) fields. Each summer, 25 students from institutions
nation-wide
participate in research and attend weekly workshops on scientific writing
and presenting, GRE preparation, and the application process for graduate
school. Under the guidance of faculty mentors, students carry out and
formally present individual research projects in their area of interest.
The application deadline is February 15, 2008.
