Hello to all my fellow Buccaneers back at CBU! For anyone who doesn't know me, my name is Sally Lynch and I am a senior at CBU this year, and the first of what I hope will be many Christian Brothers students to travel to Ormskirk, Lancashire to attend Edge Hill College. Lancashire is in the north-western part of England, near Liverpool and Manchester, and Edge Hill is one of best regarded schools in the area; actually in all of England. I have been in the UK for nearly two weeks now, and so far, things couldn't be better! Everyone here at Edge Hill has been very accommodating and welcoming; the students and staff alike are anxious to get to know all of the international students. Last week was orientation for all new students which meant plenty of meetings, appointments, and parties. For anyone considering studying abroad at Edge Hill, I'd recommend that you be ready to play the part of a freshman again!
I started classes on Monday, and have a schedule of 12 hours (4 classes). The international student liaison, Dr. Mike Hughes, is really wonderful about trying to get international students the best classes that he can. Here at Edge Hill, they realize the importance of travelling while you study, so the staff tries to grant each international student at least one day off a week (preferably a Monday or a Friday) to allow to ample travel opportunities. I have Tuesdays and Fridays off, which is just fine with me! I have already embarked on a weekend getaway to Scotland, and for those of who might be sceptical, it is possible to take a quick weekend trip and still enjoy yourself. Two new friends and I had an amazing time in Edinburgh, one of the popular destinations in Scotland!
The living situations here are very comfortable. I am living in one of the common halls called Eleanor Rathbone. In our hall, each student has a single bedroom, furnished with the basics, and having its own sink. There are community showers and toilets at the end of each hallway. Actually, on our hall, there is one toilet and one shower, but being that there are only 9 people on our floor, things are working out nicely. My neighbours include three other American students, and four freshmen from the UK. At Edge Hill, community living is highly encouraged, and everyone in our building is getting to know one another; we are all becoming fast friends. Just last night, everyone on our floor enjoyed a movie night in our common room, and tomorrow, we are all heading into the tiny town of Ormkirk (about a 10-minute walk from campus) to enjoy a night at the pubs. I hope many of you readers will consider coming to Edge Hill next year, or even next semester! I'll be keeping everyone updated on my progress here. Till then, ta' for now!
