![]() Bucs Stung by Long Ball in 9th
Memphis, TN--Harding University
offered a one-two homerun punch of Stephen Smith and Mark Connett in the top of
the ninth, upending any Christian Brothers University hope of starting the Gulf
South Conference schedule with a victory.
Behind a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth and a complete game effort
from right hand hurler, Aaron Gurley, the Bison would record the 5-4 victory
here today at Buc Field. The Buccaneers fall to 6-3 on the season with an early 0-1
mark in GSC action, with Harding ups it overall stand to 11-2 on the year with a
1-0 record in league play. Despite the dreary conditions outside, CBU would find the
scoreboard three times in the bottom of the first. Playing traditional
"small ball", the Bucs would plate three runs on just two hits to take
the early 3-0 advantage. Latarius Harris
started today’s contest with a walk, as teammate Joey
Perry moved him over with the sacrifice bunt. Harris would scamper to
third on a Gurley wild pitch, before a Zac
Clements ground-out would score the first Buc run of the game. Jason
Whitehead roped a Rusty Cagle-scoring
double to left center, before being brought around to score himself on a Wes
Hoover single through the right side. Senior ace Steven Oelke
would keep the Harding batters at bay until the top of the sixth, when after
retiring 11 consecutive batters, hitting-hero-of-the-day Connett connected on a
0-1 fastball for a single to center field. Connett would later score on an Oelke
balk call. The Bison would bring two more runs to dish before Oelke simmered
down to close out the bottom of the sixth. CBU would answer right back in the bottom of the seventh, as
Hoover led off the inning with a single up the middle on an 0-2 count, before
advancing to second on a Gurley balk call. Hoover would come around to score the
go-ahead run on a successful stolen base attempt at the plate. It seemed as if Hoover’s go-ahead run was going to hold up,
but down to their final two outs of the contest, Harding battled back to post
two runs on Connett and Smith’s heroic homeruns. After surrendering the two game-ending dingers, senior Brad
Adams was credited with the loss, falling to 0-1 for the 2002 campaign, while
Harding hill mate Gurley bumps his pitching record to On the day, CBU tagged eight hits including Hoover’s 3-of-4 effort from the plate. Cagle would add his own 2-of-3 day. CBU will look to bounce back tomorrow, as the Bucs return to Buc Field, Sunday, March 3rd for one nine-inning game and a seven-inning game against these same tenacious Bison. First pitch is slated for noon.
