Road Still Haunts Bucs Basketball
By Rori A. Eddie

MONTICELLO, AR—Factor in the fact the Boll Weevils were riding their own two-game winning streak plus the home-court advantage they held; added with the fact the Christian Brothers University men’s basketball team has yet to win a game in the 2001-2002 season on the road, and it all equaled a 67-56 Gulf South Conference victory for the University of Arkansas- Monticello this afternoon.

Inside Steelman Fieldhouse, the Boll Weevils’ Idrion Reed took possession of the opening tip and bottomed the early three-point attempt with only :23 second elapsed on the game clock. It was a clear message of what was to come, as UAM drained 6-of-12 attempts from three-point land to take the 38-30 advantage into the locker room at the half.

The second half would see the Bucs outshot the Boll Weevils 44 to 40 percent from the floor and 33 to 22 percent from downtown, but a lost battle on the rebounding glass, 31-41, would ultimately upend CBU’s chance of a comeback.

Arkansas-Monticello improves to 7-12 on the year with an even 5-5 stand in GSC play, while the Buccaneers slip to 6-14 on the season with a disappointing 3-7 mark in league action.

UAM’s Orlando Hampton paced all scorers in tonight’s contest with 21 points on 5-of-11 shooting from behind the arc, while teammate Dennis Harris contributed 10 points to pair with his game-high nine caroms. Reed ended the contest with eight points.

Freshman Jake Bazeley would be the only Buccaneer to reach double-figures, as the 6-4 guard connected on 6-of-9 tries from the floor to finish with a team-high 13 points.

Christian Brothers returns to De La SALLE Gymnasium, Monday, February 4, to host the University of Central Arkansas. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
