Bucs Basketball Finish Winless on Road
By Rori A. Eddie

CLEVELAND, MS—The Christian Brothers University men’s basketball completed the road-leg of its 2001-2002 schedule inside Walter Sillers Coliseum tonight, and at the final buzzer, the Buccaneers found themselves six-points shy of claiming their first road win of the season. In front of the home crowd, Delta State avenged an early-season upset by defeating CBU, 70-64.

The Bucs are forced to accept an 0-12 travel mark this season, while falling to 6-19 on the season with a 3-12 Gulf South Conference record. The Statesmen improve to 20-5 on the year with a stout 12-4 league stand.

Despite out-scoring Delta State, 40-32, in the second half, CBU would surrender a 29-40 rebounding deficit to the taller Statesmen. The Bucs would also struggle to convert the 17 DSU turnovers into the winning factor, as CBU only committed seven turnovers for the game.

Ramon Gary’s 14-point, eight-rebound performance proved to be enough to propel the Statesmen offense to victory. Ernie Ryans would add 11 points off the bench on a 4-of-7 shooting performance.

As a team, Delta State shot a collective 49.1 percent for the contest compared to the Buccaneers’ 40.7 shooting percentage.

Clint Dowdle paced all scorers with 16 points, including four from three-point land. Matt Francis added 13 points in his 30 minutes of action, while teammate Jake Bazeley posted an 11-point, team-high six rebound, two steal, two assist performance on the night. With his 10-point outing, Adam Heitzman was the only other Buc to reach double-figures.

CBU will play its final game of the year inside De LaSalle Gymnasium, Saturday, February 23rd. Tip-off is slated for 4 PM.
