Lady Bucs Earn First-Ever Regional Ranking
Memphis--After a little over two years on the job at CBU, Head Coach Todd Schaefer has the Christian Brothers University Women’s Basketball team with its first ever Division II Regional Ranking. The season’s first rankings released December 19th had the CBU Lady Bucs ranked 3rd in the South Region.
"I am very pleased with the progress of our program in the short time I have been here. To see our school’s name in front of traditional powers like Arkansas Tech and Delta State was extremely gratifying. I know the rankings don’t mean much until the end of the season, but I think this really proves that we are moving in the direction that we have been telling everyone."
The top six teams in each of the eight regions have a chance to qualify for the Division II NCAA Tournament in March. The Gulf South Conference does, however, have an automatic bid that goes to the winner of the Conference Tournament.
"We want to be one of the 6 teams that go to the NCAA Tournament. And in this region that means you will be one of the Top 25 teams in the country and have a chance to win the National Championship. We have been working towards that since I arrived here two years ago and we are getting closer everyday."
The Lady Bucs are off the best start in school history at 7-0. Junior Sarah Condra leads the team in scoring at 18.6 ppg. Freshmen Rubenia Finley has her career off to a good start averaging 15.6 ppg along with 3.7 steals and 4.6 rebounds.
"Our players are to be credited with the quick turnaround. We have players that have made huge sacrifices to help get us to where we are now."
With a 16 game Conference schedule ahead of them things will get only tougher for CBU. Currently four other teams in the Conference are ranked among the Top 30 in the country.
