Lady Bucs Basketball Over Matched in the Delta
By Rori Eddie

CLEVELAND, MS—Inside an emotionally-charged Walter Sillers Coliseum that saw legendary Delta State University head coach Lloyd Clark command the sidelines for his last regular season home game, the Christian Brothers University women’s basketball team, simply put, found themselves over matched tonight; as the Lady Statesmen handed the Lady Buccaneers a 68-40 loss tonight.

Delta State placed four players to the double-figure mark and connected at a 52.6 clip from the field to claim the lop-sided victory, improving to 21-5 on the year and 13-3 in Gulf South Conference play.

Meanwhile, Christian Brothers University completes the road-leg of its 2001-2002 schedule, falling to 11-14 on the season with a 4-11 league mark.

The Lady Statesmen commanded the rebounding glass, 38-28, and forced 24 costly CBU miscues with their stifling defense. The Lady Buccaneers could only manage to post 14 collective points to the scoreboard in the second half of play.

Freshman Amber Gean paced the DSU offensive attack with a team-high 18 points on a 8-of-17 shooting performance from the field, while Tasha Watt drained 6-of-8 tries from the floor to finish with 13 points on the night. The backcourt combination of Megan Teel and Janna Lyons both matched 10-point nights in the Lady Statesmen win.

Sarah Condra offered the only bright spot of the CBU night, as the junior guard offered a game-high 20 points, including six long-distance connections. On the season, Condra has now bottomed 97 three-pointers and stands just one shy of tying the all-time (men or women) single-season school record of 98. She has long surpassed her own freshman record of 70 made three-pointers.

Condra will go for history this Saturday, February 23rd, as her and her fellow Lady Bucs play host to Ouachita Baptist in CBU’s final game of the 2001-2002 campaign. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 PM, with a presentation honoring seniors Mary Buford and Jennifer Giager to follow immediately after the game.
