Lady Bucs Romp Past Bethel College
By Rori Eddie

Memphis - After coming of their best season in school history, the Lady Bucs soccer team picked up right where they left off last season. Breaking records, scoring hat tricks and dominating the opposition; that's exactly what they did tonight in their season opener versus Bethel College tromping the Lady Wildcats 12-1 breaking a school record for most goals scored in a single game.

It didn't take long for the Lady Bucs to take shape as former Mercury standout, Margaret Saurin, netted two goals in the first fifteen minutes of play. Less then a minute later, newcomer Arna Heimlund chimed in with her first goal of the season. In the 27th minute, Saurin was fouled inside the box with an opportunity at a penalty kick. Taking full advantage of the opportunity, Saurin scored on the penalty kick earning the hat trick less than thirty minutes into the game.

In the 29th minute, Heimlund was knocking at the door again scoring her second goal of the game off a header from midfielder Anna Thorsdottir. Thorsdottir found Saurin and Heimlund one more time each from the right side sending two perfect balls for Saurin's fourth goal of the game and Heimlund's hat trick. At the half, the Lady Bucs lead 7-0 over the Lady Wildcats after the scoring exhibition put on by Saurin and Heimlund.

In the second half, it took a little longer for the other members of the squad to follow the impressive first half performance, but in the 70th minute, midfielder Jessica Hester scored her first goal of the season. With a near unbelievable performance, Saurin rings the bell again scoring her fifth goal of the game for five goals in the 73rd minute. Newcomer, Sofia Rask puts in her two cents scoring from a 30-yard looper over the goalie for her first goal of the season and a 10-0 Lady Buc lead.

However, the Lady Wildcats weren't going to quit until the final buzzer sounded. Taking a rebounded shot off one of the Lady Buc defenders, Bethel's Ashley McDaniels scored their only goal of the game to save the shutout.

Having allowed the Lady Wildcats to score seemed only to motivate the most improved Lady Bucs to show that they were for real. Scoring her first two goals of the season, Thorsdottir nailed the coffin shut with two scores in the 83rd and 90th minute as the final buzzer went off.

Showing their team spirit, Thorsdottir and newcomer Anna Rask added four assists each to lead the Lady Bucs in assists.

The Lady Bucs got the season off on the right foot earning their first win of the season to improve to 1-0 and Bethel College falling to 0-1. The Lady Bucs will be back in action on Sunday, August 26th as they host NCAA Division I Arkansas State at 7:00 p.m.
