CBU, UWF To Meet Again In GSC Women's Soccer Final
By Michael Anderson

Huntsville, AL--No surprises in the semifinal rounds of the 2001 Gulf South Conference Women’s Soccer Championship at the John B. Hunt Soccer Complex (Huntsville, AL).

No. 2 seed West Florida (17-1-0, 7-1-0) began the day, defeating No. 3 Alabama-Huntsville (12-4-1, 5-2-1), 3-0, while No. 1 seed Christian Brothers (17-0-0, 8-0-0) upended No. 4 Montevallo (9-5-0, 5-3-0) 5-0.

West Florida earned its sixth Finals appearance in six years. Bridget Pace netted UWF’s first score off a Jill Rice assist in the 13th minute. Briana Oeser gave the Argonauts a 2-0 half-time advantage with a goal off a pass from Jamile Castro. Pace capped off the scoring for UWF with an unassisted goal in the 67th minute. The defense notched the shutout holding UM to only two shots on goal.

Margaret Saurin led CBU over UM with two goals and an assist, while teammate Missy Gregg netted goals for the Lady Bucs. Christian Brothers' defense held the Falcons to one shot on goal, while Montevallo keeper Adrienne Peters added a GSC Tournament record 13 saves in a losing effort.

With the victories, Christian Brothers, No. 1 in the South Region, and West Florida, No. 2, all but assured themselves of berths in the NCAA South Regional, November 10-11. CBU defeated UWF, 3-2 in overtime, in last year’s Final match and they also collected a 4-0 road-win over UWF earlier this season. Kickoff for tomorrow’s Finals is set for 3:00 pm.
