Lady Bucs Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals
Memphis--Despite thirteen years experience post-season experience, Barry University proved unsuccessful in its bid to derail the Christian Brothers University women’s soccer team’s perfect 20-0 season, as the Lady Buccaneers pounded out a 3-1 victory in NCAA Division II South Region Final at Signaigo Field today.
Making its first NCAA post-season appearance, CBU showed no signs of nerves, as the Lady Buccaneers found the score board first in the 31st minute of play. Veronica Botold delivered a beautiful cross from beyond midfield that greeted Missy Gregg in the box. Gregg would settle only to rocket home the Lady Bucs first score of the contest and her 67th on the season.
CBU would carry the 1-0 lead into intermission, before returning to add two more scores in the second half.
Continuing the trend of defenders dishing out assists, Shannon Smith chipped a ball that again met Gregg in the box. The nation’s leading scorer would convert the cross for her second goal of the contest and 68th of the year. Gregg capped her 15th hat-trick performance in 19 games with a penalty kick in the 69th minute of play. The 5-11 junior is a perfect 6-of-6 on the year for PK attempts.
At the 72:12 mark, Barry would end CBU’s hopes of a shut-out, as Ashley Snell found Pamela McDonald for the Barry Lady Bucs' only score of the contest. McDonald netted five scores on the season.
Barry completes the 2001 campaign with a 16-4 record, while the CBU Lady Bucs still await the winner of the Barton/North Florida contest.
Christian Brothers has now outscored its opponents 155-10 on the year behind a still unblemished 20-0 mark on the year.
