Cougars Need Double-Overtime
To Defeat Bucs, 2-1 In Season-Opener

lifted theNo. 18 ranked Cougars past the Christian Brothers
University Buccaneer soccer team, 2-1in the Bucs season opener
tonight.
CBU (0-1) was outshot 24-7 by SIUE (2-0) in the match and
the Bucs managed just two shots on goal.
Neither team found the back of the net for the first 71
minutes, but in the 72nd minute, CBU junior midfielder Harry
Murphy took a pass from junior Chris
Marwood from ten yards
out and beat SIUE keeper Greg Crook for the game's first
goal.
SIUE's Adam Lanter scored his second goal of the season
just 12 minutes later off a pass from Kevin Thibodeau to
tie the game at one.
The teams finished regulation tied at one and went scoreless
during the first overtime period. But 8:53 into the second
overtime,
the Cougars ended the game on Cacciatore's first goal of
the season.
Sophomore forward Kevin
Walsh and junior midfielder Ricky
Biven each had two shots as Murphy and senior's Michael
Vogel and Alan
Whittington had a shot apiece. Senior goalkeeper Marvin
Hypolite recorded 12 saves and faced 24 total shots.
Walsh had two yellow cards and ejected from the match.
Biven and senior defender Egill
Thorolfsson each
had a yellow apiece.
In last year's match at CBU, the game saw 52 total fouls
and 11 cards. This year's match was much of the same as the
teams combined for 43 fouls and six cards.
The Bucs will now travel to Northern Kentucky on Saturday,
September 4 at 4 p.m. to play a match against Ashland University.
They then play at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 5 against
Northern
Kentucky.
