Named GSC West Volleyball Freshman of the Year; Kimbrell Garners
Second-Team Honors
Birmingham, Ala. — Freshman blocker
Laura Washington (Seattle, Washington) has been named the
Gulf South Conference West Division Volleyball Freshman of
the Year as announced by the league office in Birmingham.
Washington was fifth in the conference in blocks (1.09 bpg)
and sixth in attack percentage with a .331 average. She was
second on the team in kills per game knocking home 3.26 per
contest.
Washington set a team record earlier this season as she hit
.704 at Arkansas Tech establishing a new single-match attack
percentage mark at CBU. She also helped lead the team to the
kills in a match record as they had 84 against Southern Arkansas
in the last weekend of conference play.
Washington was also named to the GSC West Second-Team and
was the only freshman to be named either first or second-team.
Joining Washington on the Second-Team is sophomore hitter
Nan Kimbrell (Lafayette, Louisiana). Kimbrell led the Lady
Bucs in kills per game with a 3.38 average, while being second
in digs per game with 2.78.
The Lady Bucs set many team match records this season including
kills (84) and hitting percentage (.412 vs. Bethel). They
also set a new team record for digs in a match with 111 versus
Central Arkansas on October 8, aces (15 vs. Mid Continent
College) and blocks (17 vs. Harding).
"We had a great combination of returnees and new faces
in the lineup this year," said head coach In-Sik Hwang.
"Our freshmen were the best in the league, bar none,
and having senior leadership like we had is crucial to a successful
team.
"I'm very proud for both Laura and Nan. They both deserve
this."
