Student Information: Are you looking for a new full-time job? Maybe a part-time job or an internship during school, or during the summer? Just about everyone who enrolls at CBU is doing so to advance their career in the long run, in one form or another, whether you are:
Whatever category you fall into, The Career Center can help make your job search a lot easier, and open up many more doors for you. We offer a lot of different services to assist you along the way, but the most beneficial service we have is our Resume Referral Program. This program allows us to send out resumes on your behalf (through mail, fax, e-mail, and the internet) to local, national, and even international employers, based on whatever criteria you set. This packet will explain what you need to do to participate in this program. It's not difficult! If you need assistance in preparing your resume, we have an excellent Resume Writing Guide available in our office that is free to all students and alumni. Additionally, we have a Career Counselor on staff who is available by appointment to offer suggestions and improvements to your resume. If you have any questions, please call us or come by the office. Don't delay! Let us help you start looking for that perfect job today! CAREER CENTER RESUME SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU: 10 printed copies of your resume - one copy on plain white copy paper, the rest should be on some form of "resume" bond paper. A Microsoft Word version of your resume (not Microsoft WORKS). You may (preferably) email this resume to: career@cbu.edu, or submit a 3 ˝" disk with the file on it. (The disk should contain no other files.) When submitting your electronic copy, the resume file should be named with your last name, an underscore character, and your first initial. For example, if your name is "John M. Williams", your filename should read: williams_jm.doc A signed waiver (found on the back of this packet) for either part-time or full-time work. If you wish to be considered for BOTH full-time and part-time work, please specify this on your waiver. A few final reminders about your resume: 1. Be SURE that your resume includes your full address, city, state, zip code, phone number, and e-mail address. That sounds like common sense, but you'd be surprised how many resumes we see that have incomplete information in this section. Note: An e-mail address is now REQUIRED on your resume before that can be submitted to the Career Center. If you don't have an e-mail address, remember that you can get one FREE through CBU. Contact the ITS Help Desk for details. 2. NEVER INCLUDE PERSONAL INFORMATION, such as: Social security number, age, height, weight, marital status, children, etc. You may see this on older resumes, but it is considered "passé", and should be completely left off. 3. BE SURE THAT YOUR RESUME INCLUDES AN EDUCATION SECTION, listing your school (CBU), academic major, and graduation date (month and year). There are always questions about your education section, so please refer to our Resume Writing Guide for some good examples. 4. If you have a two-page resume, BE SURE THAT THE PAGES ARE STAPLED TOGETHER. Not paper-clipped, not separated, not dog-eared, not glued, not duct-taped...STAPLED. Do keep in mind that when YOU mail a resume individually, it is proper not to staple the pages together. However, for our purposes, since we deal with hundreds of folders of resumes at once, it is required that you staple a two-page resume, so that "page two" isn't accidentally separated from your "page one". 5. DO NOT INCLUDE REFERENCE PAGES OR COVER LETTERS WITH YOUR RESUME. Cover letters should always be individually tailored to a specific company. A cover letter beginning with "Gentlemen:" or "To Whom It May Concern" is practically useless. For our purposes, it not only unnecessary, but detrimental, to include a cover letter. We will send a standard cover letter with each group of resumes we send out from our staff. If a company rep wants to see your references, he or she will ask you for them upon the scheduling of an interview. 6. BE SURE TO COMPLETE THE RESUME QUESTIONNAIRE & RELEASE FORM WHEN YOU TURN IN YOUR RESUMES. While you wouldn't be listing your resumes with us if your consent was not implied, we still need LEGAL written permission to act on your behalf to send out your resume. It's the law. So be sure to sign the Release Form when you drop off your resumes. In addition to the release form, a short questionnaire is included to give us a better idea of what type of positions you are looking for. So be sure to fill it out as completely as you can. 7. Finally, always be sure you turn in 10 copies! Never turn in just ONE copy of your resume. We send out lots of them...one copy will usually disappear very quickly. When you turn in your resumes, all but one copy should be printed on high-quality bond paper. If you have any specific questions about the resume document itself, please reference our Resume Writing Guide, or make an appointment with our Career Counselor for assistance. RESUME REFERRAL "ON-LINE" POLICIES & PROCEDURES: The same policies that govern all other web pages within the CBU domain apply to these resume pages as well. A detailed description of these policies and procedures can be found on the CBU Information Technology Services web site. When you turn in your resumes to our office, you are automatically included in all facets of the program, which includes mailing, faxing, e-mailing resumes, as well as including them in our web- based interactive program. It is important that you follow these instructions carefully so that you can be included in every phase of the Resume Referral Program: Send your resume to us as an email attachment, or bring your resume to us on a diskette, which we will use to create a page for you within the structure of the on-line system. IMPORTANT REMINDERS: If you bring us a disk, use a NEW diskette, or one that has no other documents on it except for your resume. (We don't want you coming back up looking for that term paper you were working on last semester, because it won't be there!) It is highly recommended that you use any version of MicroSoft Word, preferably the Office 97 version or later, which is the standard word processor at CBU, and is available on most computer terminals on campus. If MS Word is not available to you, please check with a staff member to utilize a computer in the Career Center computer lab. Once your resume is complete, save it according to the following specifications: If you are using MicroSoft Word 97, name the resume file using your last name and first initial (If you have a common last name, please also use your middle initial.) For example, if your name is John Q. Anybody, you should name your file: anybody_jq.doc (Use all lowercase letters. You shouldn't need to type the ".doc" part, it should appear automatically after you save it. Make sure you are using a Word DOCUMENT FILE, not a TEMPLATE file. It should tell you what file type you are using at the bottom of the "save" menu.) Please DO NOT simply name your file "resume" or "John's Resume". When dealing with literally hundreds of resumes, this can make it difficult to sort out who is who, so please make sure you name your document properly! If you email the file to us, please put the word "Resume", followed by your name in the subject line of your email, i.e., "Resume - John Q. Anybody". If you bring us a disk, be sure to label your diskette properly, by using of the labels provided near our resume drop-box. Affix this label to your disk (right side up), and fill in the requested information (name, major, and graduation date.) When your resume is ready, bring your hard copies, disk, and waiver form to the Career Center. Place all items in a manila folder and leave them in the drop box at the end of the hall (Top Floor, Barry Hall.) If you are email your resume instead of submitting a disk, check the appropriate box on the waiver form to indicate this.
