Alpha Sigma Tau History

"The charter members were very, very close friends and have ever
since remained so." ~ Harriett Marx, founder of Alpha Sigma Tau

So it seems that even from the beginning Alpha Sigma Tau
has been devoted to cultivating friendship and sisterhood.

Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority was founded by these eight great women at the first college west of the Allegheny Mountains, Michigan State Normal College, now known as Eastern Michigan University, in Ypsilanti on November 4, 1899.

In April 1905, the Beta Chapter of AST was formed at Central Michigan Normal School. Other chapters soon affiliated, and by 1926, Alpha Sigma Tau had achieved membership in the Association of Education Sororities.

The Sorority's first National Convention was held in Detroit, where the Sorority magazine, The Anchor, was established.

In December 1951, AES merged with the National Panhellenic Conference, and Alpha Sigma Tau began its long and active association with NPC.

The Alpha Sigma Tau National Foundation was incorporated in 1982 to expand the educational and charitable activities of the Sorority. This milestone provided AST with the means to make stronger philanthropic contributions and to provide more academic scholarships to sisters.

In 1995, AST established its new National Headquarters in Birmingham. Today, AST is still a remarkable sorority with many accomplishments!

The Delta Chi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau was chartered at Christian Brothers University on April 30, 2005, by thirteen fantastic founders. The sisterhood had thrived on campus for two and a half years as an Alpha Sigma Tau colony and for four years before that as local sorority Gamma Phi.

The sisterhood started small in numbers, but great in spirit. AST has a history of friendliness, sisterly loyalty, and fun. Even as the sisterhood welcomed more members, Alpha Taus remained a truly unique sisterhood, rich in tradition as well as individuality.

While welcoming new sisters, AST became even more service- oriented, adopting the Eating Disorders Coalition of Tennessee in addition to traditions of supporting Gamma Phi's local philanthropy (Cynthia Milk Fund) and Alpha Sigma Tau's national philanthropies (Habitat for Humanity and Pine Mountain Settlement School).

Alpha Sigma Tau became a dynamic group on CBU's campus, with Taus involved in almost every aspect of student life - from Lasallian Ambassadors to Peer Counselors, from Encore! actresses to star athletes, SGA leaders, Honors Journal editors, campus ministry volunteers, and more! Alpha Sigma Tau remains a vibrant organization on CBU's campus, encouraging individual interests while maintaining our common goals of being Active, Self-reliant, and Trustworthy.

Gamma Phi History

In 1998, after three years of hard work and patience, local sorority Gamma Phi was founded at Christian Brothers University. Gamma Phi was a remarkable sisterhood which places high values on friendship, diversity, and academics. Gamma Phi had sisters of a wide range of majors and cultural groups. These sisters thrived on campus as a closeknit sisterhood, with unique traditions and great love and loyalty.

Gamma Phi's symbol was the shamrock and mascot was the turtle. Their flower was the sterling rose, and they celebrated with their annual Sterling Rose Ball. G-Phi supported the Cynthia Milk Fund.

In 2002, G-Phi decided to affiliate with a national sorority to grow even more. Alpha Sigma Tau was a perfect fit! AST's principles and purpose - not only were they noble goals, but they also fit Gamma Phi's ideals. Thus in October 2002 the green and silver of Gamma Phi became the emerald and gold of Alpha Sigma Tau.

Alpha Sigma Tau and Gamma Phi - Sisters Forever!

The yellow rose, the flower of friendship, is a fitting symbol for our sisterhood.
