KUDOS
Dr. Malinda Fitzgerald (Biology) gave two lectures to
50 students of Ms. Betty Cook's "Anatomy and Physiology" class
at Ridgeway High School. The topic of the lectures was clinical correlations
and ocular anatomy.
Dr. Peter Gathje (Religion & Philosophy) gave a series
of talks on "The Tradition of War and Peace in the Bible" for
the priests and brothers of the Southern District of the Society of the
Divine Word at their Recollection and Chapter meeting held at the Mercy
Center in St. Louis on January 11.
Brother Kevin Ryan (Physics & Natural Science) won
the Super-Senior (60+) doubles tennis championship at Six50 Total Body
Sportsplex in December, winning four matches in four days. His doubles
partner is age 74.
Three history majors presented papers at the recent Phi Alpha Theta conference
in New Orleans. Casey Goff presented "U.S. Diplomatic
Policy, the Soviet Union, and Prisoners of War," Michaela
Lemen presented "Women in Combat in the 20th Century,"
and Raye Raye Powell presented "No Gun Ri: War Crime
or Tragedy." The session's title was "Civilians and Soldiers
in War." It was chaired by Dr. Frank Buscher
(History & Political Science).
CBU IN THE NEWS
Dr. Janet McCord (Religion & Philosophy) and her
husband, Michael, were featured in an article in the December 19 issue
of Memphis Business Journal. The article, "Insurance petri
dish," dealt with microfinance insurance programs in Uganda and also
mentioned Dr. McCord's work with the MIRT program there.
Christopher Kelley (Barret School of Banking) was the
subject of a Memphis Business Journal "Profile" in
the December 26 issue, covering his career transition from baseball (as
a former player in the MLB Texas Rangers minor league system) to banking.
CONDOLENCES
Edward Herman Engel, infant son of Shawna G.
Engel (Alumni Office) and Randy Engel ('95),
passed away on January 14. Memorial mass will be said at 10:00 a.m. on
Saturday, January 24, at Stritch Chapel. The family requests that any
memorials be sent to the Edward Herman Engel Scholarship Fund at CBU.
Mrs. Grace Beard, mother of Dr. Bernard Beard
(Mechanical Engineering) passed away during the holidays. Condolences
can be sent to the Beard family at 9850 Dogwood Place, Germantown, TN
38139. Please keep the family in your prayers.
Louis J. Moroni, brother of the late Brother
Alfred Moroni, passed away on January 7 in Scottsdale, AZ. The
family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Brother Alfred Moroni
Endowed Scholarship Fund at CBU.

Elizabeth Jackson has joined the Plough Memorial Library
in the position of Interlibrary Loan Librarian. She comes to CBU from
Cherokee Elementary School, and is a recent graduate of the School of
Library and Information Science at the University of Southern Mississippi.

FORUM ON EATING DISORDERS
The campus community is invited to attend a forum entitled "Eating
Disorders: Facts, Myths, and How to Help" on Tuesday, January
27, 1:00 -2:00 p.m. in Spain Auditorium. The forum will be presented by
Dr. Gina Prigoff, clinical psychologist, and is sponsored
by the CBU Counseling Center.
OPEN AUDITIONS FOR SPRING PLAY
Auditions for the spring play, The Dining Room
by A.R. Gurney, will be held January 26-28, on the theatre stage, beginning
at 6:00 p.m. each evening. Scripts are available in the CBU Print Shop

LASALLIAN VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Mr. David Kasievich, Director of the Lasallian Volunteer
Program will be visiting CBU on January 29-30. Along with David will be
Justin Kuehl ('03), who is now in the program and working in
New York. David and Justin will make a presentation on Friday,
January 30, in the East Lounge at 12:30 p.m., and will be available
to answer questions. The Lasallian Volunteer movement offers a unique
opportunity for an individual to respond to Christ's call to service of
others and especially the poor. This is a great challenge to give a year
or your life in serving those in need while living and working with the
Christian Brothers Community. Volunteers receive a stipend and health
benefits, and their government loans are deferred for a period of time.
Volunteers who stay in the program for two years will receive a FREE Master's
Degree at any of the seven Lasallian universities in the U.S. To
