Governor Phil Bredesen is Seidman Lecture Speaker April 27

(Memphis)---Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen will be the speaker at the M. L. Seidman Town Hall Lecture Series at Christian Brothers University on Thursday, April 27, 2006. Bredesen will speak on “The Crisis in Health Care Benefits-Tennessee’s Challenges and Opportunities.” in the CBU theatre, De La Salle Hall at 7 p.m.

Bredesen took control of TennCare the state's financially troubled Medicaid-expansion program by preserving full enrollment for children and pursuing innovating care and disease-management initiatives. Even after reductions in adult enrollment to maintain TennCare's fiscal balance, the program remains one of the most generous and comprehensive state healthcare plans in the nation. The governor’s newest health care initiative is “Cover Tennessee,” a plan that he recently announced that includes provisions to provide health care to the uninsured.

Before serving as governor, Bredesen built a reputation for effective leadership as the mayor of Nashville from 1991-1999. He was elected Tennessee’s 48th governor is 2003.

Mr. and Mrs. P.K. Seidman established the M.L. Seidman Memorial Town Hall Lecture Series in memory of M.L. Seidman. Mr. M.L. Seidman was the founder of an international accounting firm who maintained an active interest in public issues.

A series of lectures is scheduled each year in which recognized authorities on current public issues are presented in a town hall forum. In each series, opposing points of view on the public issue are developed and the active participation of students, faculty and members of the Memphis community is encouraged. The lecture series is in its 40th year.

Governor Bredesen’s address is open to the public and reservations are recommended. For more information and to RSVP for the M.L. Seidman Town Hall Lecture Series at Christian Brothers University, call Lisa Teaford in the Advancement Office at CBU at 901-321-3270, or email: lteaford@cbu.edu.
