Elisa Marus CBU Gallery to Feature "New Paintings" by Jana Travis
(Memphis)—The Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University is proud to present an exhibition of paintings by Memphis artist and CBU faculty member Jana Travis entitled "New Paintings," January 19 – February 22, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Friday, January 19, in the gallery on the lower level of Plough Memorial Library, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
"Nature casts layer upon endless layer of limitless textures, shapes, colors, and immeasurable unseen subtleties that can’t be described in any written form. Therefore, I paint. Through my paintings I try to capture the influences of these points in nature and instill them in my work. Like nature, my work constantly evolves and changes to reflect my interpretation of the world around me" states Travis.
Born in Louisiana, Travis lived in various parts of the South before settling in Memphis where she has spent the majority of her life. She began painting professionally in her twenties and has had several exhibitions in the United States and abroad. Despite her Southern roots, Travis claims her art to be mostly influenced by the three years spent in Guadalajara, Mexico. In 1996, she was chosen to exhibit at the Mexican-American Cultural Institute, where she was recognized for her culturally inspired work on a Latin news network. Upon returning to the United States, Travis received a Master of Fine Arts in painting from the University of Memphis and began teaching shortly thereafter as an adjunct professor for several years. Travis is currently an assistant professor of art at Christian Brothers University, where she is also chair of the Department of Fine Arts and Speech and holds the Harold R. Krelstein Chair in Performing Arts and Communications.
