Exhibition of Paintings and Poems by Artist Burton
Callicott
Scheduled for CBU Gallery Beginning August 15
(Memphis, TN)---Christian Brothers University will
present “The Light Within: Burton Callicott, Paintings and Poems”
in the University Gallery, August 15 – October 10, 2003. This
is the first solo exhibition by the revered local artist in Memphis
since 1991, and the first exhibition ever to present examples of his
poetry in conjunction with his paintings.
Burton Callicott, Professor Emeritus of the Memphis College of Art and
probably the city’s most recognized and respected artist, was
born in Terre Haute, IN in 1907 and moved to Memphis in 1912. He graduated
from the Cleveland School of Art (now the Cleveland Institute of Art)
in 1931 and began his long teaching career at the James Lee Memorial
Academy of Art in 1936. He accepted a faculty position at the newly
established Memphis Academy of Art (now the Memphis College of Art)
the next year. Except for period as an aircraft draftsman and illustrator
during World War II, Callicott remained at MCA until his retirement
in 1978.
Over his seven-decade artistic career, Callicott’s work has been
exhibited and honored on the local and national level. He has been the
subject of three solo exhibitions at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art,
along with showings at the Memphis College of Art, the Tennessee State
Museum, Cheekwood Museum, Arkansas Art Center, and numerous private
galleries. Callicott’s art has long been inspired by the tenets
on Theosophy, and has manifested itself in explorations of light and
color — both naturalistic and abstract. “The Light Within”
is a small retrospective bringing together a range of 19 works from
1934 to 1993. This exhibition is supported in part by a $6,000 First
Tennessee Bank Bravo grant.
Paintings in this exhibition are on loan from some private
collections and have never been displayed to the public. An opening
reception honoring Mr. Callicott will be held Friday, August 15, 5:30-7:30
p.m. in the University Gallery located on the lower level of Plough
