THE RABAT In the traditional habit worn by the Christian Brothers, a long black robe is accompanied by a white "bib" collar called a "rabat" (from the French, meaning "flap"), similar to that worn by judges and barristers in England. The rabat’s two flat sections are said to signify the two tablets of the law given to Moses by God. (see example at left) The rabat symbol used at CBU is a cruciform shape that was graphically adapted from the shape of original collars by Askew Nixon Ferguson Architects for use as an architectural ornament. It appears on the brick fence standards along the perimeter of the campus and on the Bell Tower. Variations of it also appear in numerous locations including the lobby floor of De La Salle Hall, in the pavement of the De La Salle Plaza, and on the new pediment of the University Theater. The three approved variations on the new Christian Brothers University logo are below. Graphic standards governing its usage will be made available on August 16 at its formal adoption. |
