Personal Counseling

It is not unusual to experience some personal concerns or difficulties while in college. Counseling provides a safe, confidential environment where people can share thoughts and feelings, explore concerns, gain awareness and insight, and make appropriate changes.

Some common reasons for seeking personal counseling include the desire to:
  -improve relationships
  -deal with depression
  -increase self-confidence and assertiveness
  -manage stress and anxiety effectively
  -cope with academic pressures
  -clarify values, goals, and priorities
-explore problems related to alcohol/drug use

All services provided by the Counseling Center are free of charge and confidential. No information about counseling visits is entered on an official university record, nor is information released to others without the student’s prior written consent except when disclosure of specific information is essential to protect the student or someone else from danger.

Crisis Counseling/Intervention

The Counseling Center provides services to students who may be experiencing psychological or behavioral difficulties. In the event that further evaluation and/or intense psychotherapy is deemed necessary, the Counselor may make a referral to the university’s part-time psychologist or to a community mental health resource.

Consultative and Referral Services

Consultative services for students, staff and faculty are provided by the Counseling Center. Also, in cases where specialized expertise is deemed necessary and/or in the best interest of the student, the Counseling Center utilizes referral resources within the institution as well as in the local community.

Cooperative relationships and mutual referrals are maintained with other campus resources including Campus Ministry, Career Testing/Counseling, Health Resources, and Academic Services. Services provided by the university’s part-time psychologist are also on a referral basis through the Counseling Center.

Strong networking with several local psychologists, therapists, and mental health agencies is maintained by the Counselor and is utilized as deemed most appropriate per situation.
