MEMPHIS — Dates, events, and programs during the 2016 Alumni and Parents Weekend are now published online! During the four-day program, alums and parents of currents students are invited to pay a visit to the CBU and partake in a robust schedule of activities both on and off campus.
One of the main goals, in Alumni Director Terez Wilson’s words, is “to come back to campus to assist students with navigating the path to success after college.” And while many alums return to campus throughout the year to serve on a panel, act as mentors, or speak to a class, Alumni and Parents Weekend is an excellent opportunity for alums to interact with students and share some of the wisdom that they’ve gleaned over the years in a more informal setting. This happens through the annual Trivia Night event, in which alums and students gather in Alfonso Dining Hall to test their knowledge against one another with CBU’S own distinguished trivia master, Brother Ignatius Brown (affectionately known among the trivia crowd as “Brother Iggy”).
New to the Alumni and Parents Weekend schedule this year is the resurrection of the Riverboat Party, sponsored by the National Alumni Board. From 1967 through the 1990s, the Gamma Theta Phi Fraternity Gamma chapter used to put on a Riverboat Dance that featured great live bands. One of the fraternity members used to play backup drums at Stax Records and had some contacts to invite up-and-coming bands. There was always plenty of music, dancing, and libations for the evening. The dances in the early ‘70s started off with a dropping of balloons to start the festive event. On Saturday, October 8, alumni will get the chance to board the “Memphis Showboat” and gaze out across the mighty Mississippi River and reunite with old friends throughout the night. Tickets for the Riverboat party are $25 by September 16, and increase to $35 after that date.
Parents of current students will also get the opportunity to get a taste of the college experience at CBU through activities like classroom visits, soccer games against the University of West Alabama, and receptions to answer questions related to the Lasallian tradition, careers after college, and more.
