A QUICK WORD FROM THE DEAN

Image of Dr. Marius Carriere, Dean of Arts at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TNWelcome back to what promises to be a truly exciting academic year. It doesn’t seem like much time has passed since our last Newsletter and, for that reason, there isn’t much new information. I will report, however, that across the University there has been a slight increase in enrollment and we, in the School of Arts have experienced an increase, too. Education has had a very successful fall enrollment and our other departments have also done well. It was difficult finding classes in which to place all of our new students. Not only have we witnessed an increase in numbers, but the quality of our students has also increased over last year. Our regular readers will know that we have a number of new faculty and we are all looking forward to great things this semester.

Peace and Love,

Marius Carriere

REPORT FROM INTERNATIONAL INITIATIVES OFFICE

Fall 2006

The Office of International Initiatives is launching the new school year with a “sold out” trip for the fall break study abroad trip to Rome, October 13-21. Twenty-three students, faculty and staff have been looking forward to participating in a trip to the Eternal City.

The course, Martyrs, Monks, and Mystics of the Early Church, taught by Father Val Handwerker, rector at Immaculate Conception Cathedral, will provide a walk back in time to the early beginnings of the Christian church and history of Rome. In addition to a visit to some of the early Christian churches, the group will visit St. Peter’s Cathedral with an American seminarian, and possibly climb to the top of the cupola for the more energetic, and take part in a Papal audience. Also included will be a tour of the Vatican Museum with a chance to view Michelangelo’s astonishing painting of the Sistine Chapel. For a lesson in early Roman history, our guide, Roberto, will take the group on a tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and Mamertine Prison where Peter and Paul were held as prisoners, plus a trip through one of the many catacombs.

In continuing the course covering the lives of the early martyrs, monks and mystics, the group will make a day trip through the beautiful countryside of Umbria to the picturesque town of Assisi to visit the place where Saint Francis lived and worked. They will visit the church that he built, San Damiano, at the foot of the mountain, and the beautiful St. Francis Basilica where he is buried. They will enjoy the breathtakingly beautiful views of the valley below and have lunch in a quaint sidewalk café.

Spring 2007

Plans are well under way for a study abroad trip to Barcelona and the Costa Brava region of Spain for spring break, March 6-10. Brother Francisco Martin, who has visited this area several times, is planning a course to explore the art, culture, and language of Spain for Spanish credit. Global studies with Emily Forsdick or economics with Pat Papachristou are also possibilities. Students will travel and explore the Mediterranean from Barcelona to France, will visit the picturesque towns and ancient sights of early Greek and Roman settlements and the historic towns of Gerona and Figueres, home of surrealist painter Salvador Dali. A day trip to the Citadel of Carcassone in France, a walled medieval city, is also planned. A two-day visit to Barcelona with its 2000-year history, its avant-garde artistic currents, and its trendy lifestyle will provide a fitting close for the holiday experience.

Summer 2007

Other projects being explored for 2007-2008 are another month in England, a summer Spanish immersion program in Mexico and study trips to China and India for business and culture. As plans develop they will be posted on the Study Abroad website.
