Welcome to the Art department Web site at Christian Brothers University. The following information pertains to the NEW Bachelor of Fine Arts major with an emphasis in Studio Art. Request information or apply now through the Admissions Office.

Mission and Learning Outcomes

Our mission is to challenge the student to combine the creative and intellectual process while learning to communicate through images. Just as a writer thinks in words, a musician in sound and rhythm, and a mathematician in numbers, an artist thinks visually. At CBU, the student will be challenged to use all aspects of their Lasallian education to become imaginative problem solvers that possess the ability to create individual and socially relevant works of art.

Through small classroom numbers, we are able to provide individualized instruction at the highest academic level. Students studying art at CBU rapidly develop a sense of community with their peers as well as their professors through campus and community activities.

The Department offers:

Students may choose from several disciplines: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, or any combination of these in order to complete their major. The study of art history is a vital part of this major. It places art in a historical context along with religious, cultural, and social issues in order to understand how art contributes to our rapidly changing world.

In our studio program, we are made aware of global issues in art through study abroad programs, visiting artists from around the world, local exhibitions, and internships.

Learning Outcomes

  • Produce and mount a comprehensive exhibition of work in their chosen discipline; including, a written thesis placing the work in a historical and contemporary context along with technical applications.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of art historical movements and the artists that led and participated in those movements.
  • Possess the ability to verbalize and demonstrate an advanced level of understanding in a preferred medium.
  • Develop ideas and exhibit the ability to manifest those ideas through self-motivation.
  • Graduate with a completed body of work and knowledge that prepares students for graduate studies, a career as a professional artist, or a career in art related fields.
