Department Overview The Information Technology Management combines two major fields of study. The first is the study of Telecommunications and the second is the study of Computer Information Systems with an emphasis on using technology to solve business problems. This program provides the student with the practical skills required to succeed in today's rapidly changing world of Information Technology. Based in the School of Business you will gain strong business skills as well as a comprehensive set of current technical skills. Today's manager and practitioner in Information technology must have a strong foundation in both of these areas to be successful in developing and managing distributed, Client Server, and Web based systems. Program Highlights In addition to the School of Business requirements for graduation, the Information Technology Management major will take introductory and intermediate classes in IT principles and applications. Due to the rapid pace at which this area is advancing, special topic courses are offered as required to provide an understanding of current, leading edge technology. Concurrent with our emphasis on developing telecommunication skills, the student will develop a wide set of skills required to successfully develop and implement current computing technology. These sessions begin with an introduction to desktop computing. A course in the issues and techniques required to develop computer based solutions to business problems. All students are required to learn the C/C++ programming language, master Systems Analysis and Design as well as Data Base Design. Other courses offered in this area are: The Java programming language, Object Oriented Analysis and Design, and Information Systems Management. In the Computer Information Systems area we also offer courses on current topics such as AI, Operating Systems, etc. Outcomes and Opportunities Our recent graduates are pursing a wide range of activities. Some seek to further their educational goals by attending graduate schools at Christian Brothers University, University of Colorado, Duke, Georgia, Georgia Tech and others. Many of our graduates have directly entered the workforce where they are employed as network designers, network managers, systems analysts, application developers, managers and one Chief Information Officer. Many of our graduates are employed at Federal Express, International Paper, Harrahs, Promus, MCI, ATT, Sprint and many others. Real World Preparation The Information Technology Management program at Christian Brothers University differs from many traditional Management Information Systems (MIS) programs and most Computer Science programs. Realizing that most new college graduates will not be called upon immediately to manage an Information Technology department at a major corporation, in addition to developing managerial skills, we focus on developing a broad range of practical skills that will allow you to make a positive technical contribution that will help you to succeed in the business environment. You will be prepared to support current technology and architectures with an emphasis on developing and implementing distributed Client Server applications to support business processes. These systems require individuals that have analysis, design, and development skills in both workstation class computer implementations and networking. Additional emphasis is placed on identifying the need for new applications or technology and integrating them into the corporate culture. Facilities We currently have three computing laboratories in the School of Business. These laboratories provide networked Pentium computers running Windows 95/98, Office 95/2000 and other desktop applications such as internet browsers, language compilers, math and statistice packages, accounting and management applications, etc. The computer center provides Sun UNIX systems and maintains several computer laboratories which are available to students. We also provide an extensive optical fiber based network interconnecting all offices, laboratories, and dorm rooms with each other and the Internet.
