POLITICAL SCIENCE COURSES
POLS 112. AMERICAN GOVERNMENT
A survey of the American political system, including constitutionalism;
federalism; the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government;
political dynamics; civil liberties and rights; and public policy. Offered
in the Fall and Spring. One semester; three credits
POLS 113. WORLD POLITICS
A survey of the basic concepts and theories in political science; the
formation of nation-states; political attitudes and ideologies; comparative
political systems and governments; political participation; organizations,
and policies; comparative political institutions; international relations,
law, conflict, order, and organizations. Offered in the Fall and Spring.
One semester; three credits

POLS 320. POLITICAL IDEAS
Theories of the origin of the state and political ideologies, including
Nationalism, Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Anarchism, Classical Liberalism
and Conservatism, Authoritarianism, Totalitarianism, Marxism, Leninism,
Maoism, Fascism, National Socialism, race, gender, and third-world ideologies.
Prerequisite: POLS 113 or permission of the instructor. One semester;
three credits
POLS 340. NAZI GERMANY
(Same as HIST 340) Prerequisites: HIST 104, POLS 113, 320, or permission
of the instructor. One semester; three credits
POLS 360. AMERICAN POLITICAL THOUGHT
From the Colonial Period to the present with emphasis on the European
origins, the American Revolution, the Constitution, the slavery issue,
20th Century reform, and contemporary liberal and conservative ideas
and movements. Prerequisite: POLS 112 or HIST151 or permission of instructor.
(Same as HIST 360) Offered in the Fall semester. One semester; three
credits
POLS 401. U.S. CONSTITUTIONAL LAW
An examination of the structure of U.S. government and the limits on
governmental power through detailed analysis of the U.S. Constitution
and Supreme Court decisions interpreting it. The course will also examine
the appropriate scope of judicial review in a democratic society. Prerequisite:
POLS 112 or HIST 151 or permission of the department head. One semester;
three credits
POLS 470-479. TOPICS IN POLITICAL SCIENCE
Topics vary with instructor. Prerequisite: Permission of instructor.

Topics vary with instructors, e.g. Criminal Justice, Legal Research,
etc. Prerequisite: Permission of the department head. One semester each;

POL 490-499. INTERNSHIP
Content varies with specific internship program. Prerequisite: Permission
of Political Science Internship Director. One semester each; one to
three credits.
