Mid-South Woodturners Exhibition at CBU Gallery

Memphis -- The Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University will present an exhibition of works in wood by the Mid-South Woodturners Guild entitled "Beneath the Bark," August 17 - October 4, 2007. An opening reception will be held on Friday, August 17, in the gallery on the lower level of Plough Memorial Library, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

The Mid-South Woodturners Guild is a local chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. The AAW is an international, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of the woodturning craft.  Its mission is to provide information, education, a meeting place, and an effective organization for all who are interested in turning wood.

Woodturning is a technique by which objects are created on a lathe, a machine that rotates wood. As the wood turns, a woodworker shapes it with a cutting tool, such as a scraper or a gouge, and produces hand-made one-of-a-kind objects. Historically, the functional wooden object has given way to the nonfunctional, conceptual object or sculpture incorporating turned wood. Today, the woodturning craft and artistry claims a place of high respect in the studio art world long enjoyed by glass and clay.
