Title: Assistant Professor of Biology

Phone:  321-3463
e-mail:  ksauser@cbu.edu

Length of service at CBU: Dr. Sauser has been at CBU since 1999 when she was appointed Science Lab Coordinator.  She was appointed to Assistant Professor of Biology last fall (2008).

Courses being taught this fall:  BIOL 107 Environmental Biology and lab; BIOL 217L Human Anatomy & Physiology I Lab, and BIOL 367 Pharmacology.

Other courses taught: Dr. Sauser taught Human Biology (BIOL 109) as an adjunct professor a couple of times before she started here as Sciences' lab supervisor. She has taught Principles of Biology I and II (BIOL 111 and 112) a few times when someone was on sabbatical. She routinely teaches the Principles labs during the spring and fall semesters and Principles of Biology II (BIOL 112) with lab in the summer. She has also taught the lab for Human Anatomy and Physiology II (BIOL 218) recently.  Last year she developed a new course, BIOL 370 Toxicology.

Formal Education: Dr. Sauser graduated from Immaculate Conception High School. She graduated from UT Martin with a B.S. in Biology and then earned her Masters in Marine Biology from Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Florida. After this she worked at UT Health Sciences as a research assistant for a few years in the Pharmacology Dept. This job kindled her interest in pharmacology and toxicology, and from there she returned to school at Memphis State and got her Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology. After graduation she worked for a short time again at UT in the Neonatal Dept.

Background: Dr. Sauser grew up in Springfield, Ohio and moved to Memphis with her family when she was a junior in high school. She has been married to Mark for 19 years. He is a graduate of CBU and actually came to CBU as a student Brother. ("I did not meet him until several years later so his decision to not be a Brother had nothing to do with me!") He works at International Paper. They have 5 kids: Maggie, 14 is a freshman at IC; Colleen is 12; Clare is 10; Will is 8; and Timmy is 5.5. They all attend St. Louis grade school. That is also their parish.

Interests: Dr. Sauser's hobbies/interests are reading, particularly right now discovering and reading Catholic literature, painting, hiking and spending time with her kids. She is also an instuctor in the Billings Method of Natural Family Planning for the Diocese of Memphis. (Please note there is no correlation between her effectiveness as an instructor and the number of her kids!)

Comments: "I enjoy this job because I get to interact with alot of people, both students and faculty. I have always enjoyed being in an academic setting where the emphasis is on learning. By working with all the biology and chemisty faculty I'm exposed to different areas of study that I might not normally be involved in. This job also gives me the flexibility to keep up with all my kids."
