We are extremely pleased that Burton Callicott has allowed Christian Brothers University Gallery to share his poetry with the public for the first time in this, his first solo exhibition in Memphis since 1991. For over 50 years, viewers and collectors have been engaged by his luminous and powerful canvases. Together now, image and word make manifest the deeply spiritual nature of the artist and offer further expression of his profound sensibility, intellect, and inner light.
This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Evelyne Callicott, for whom Burton painted Red Moon Rising - seen for the first time in public in this exhibition. It is also dedicated to the late Alex Dann, whose great enthusiasm for this project was an encouragement. As do many, they both loved the artist and his art, and they will long be in our memory.
