For over twenty years, Annabelle Meacham has been painting surrealist subject matter in a realistic style. About two years ago, she began a change to a more metaphysical element in her work, to a quicker brush style, and to an acceptance of her desire for decorative elements. Her art is still about mental associations, and about the exploring and making images of those associations. She is largely concentrating on her relationship with animals and plants.
The artist feels that her work reflects her Southern birth and heritage, as well as the wide-ranging interests and travels of a modern person. She has lived in such varied places as California, New York, and London. She has traveled to the Orient, Europe, Canada, Greece, and up the Nile. She now lives with her husband in North Mississippi and is a full-time painter. Her work is in the collections of Promus Hotel Corporation, Federal Express, Holiday Inns Hotel Group, Meridian Museum of Art, and the Arts Center of the Ozarks. She is represented in Memphis by the Jay Etkin Gallery, whose courtesy and cooperation make this exhibition possible.
