Peter Songhen recently retired from the Memphis College of Art, where he taught Clay and 3-D Design since 1969. "My first teaching job was as an English teacher at Robert College in Istanbul," Songhen says. "I first learned to throw pots from a village potter in Turkey, and then as a potter's apprentice in the salt glazing district of Germany." He then studied ceramics at Mills College, under Tony Prieto, and received the Master of Fine Arts at Alfred University (State University of New York College of Ceramics).
Sohngen's work has been widely represented in art and craft exhibitions across the nation for more than three decades. His most recent regional exhibits have been at Hendrix College (Conway, AR), and in Memphis at the Arts in the Park Invitational and Delta Axis. Sohngen published a full-length technical article in the December 1999 issue of Studio Potter, and his work is represented in The Clay Lover's Guide, published by Lark Books.
