The Art of Gregory Zeorlin

August 20 - October 1, 2004

There are multiple reasons to make art, but if I could only list one, it would be because if gives me satisfaction. I could list historical sources of inspiration and contemporary artists that I admire, but what keeps me returning to the studio is the pleasure of expressing an idea as a work of art. I am able to problem solve, ask questions, research, experiment, make mistakes, and even play inside the studio. Few people know the pleasure of making something from start to finish.

Since I can list more reasons for making art, I'll add that poetry and photography are significant generators of ideas. Writing poetry serves as a type of beginning sketch for a possible work of art. Photography is an immediate way for me to record what I see and let others nearly look through my eyes.

Most of my art and poetry reflects my daily life. I wish I could write about exotic travel, but it is the day to day rituals that mainly come into my artistic life. The more I work in the studio, the more I realize how marriage, family life and a vivid imagination are all merging. Magic, logic, chaos and order seem to be the main elements circling around my daily life as an artist. Sometimes my art possesses bits of all four.
