Step 3: Find Books & Videos

LIBRARY CATALOG

The library's online catalog, BUCCAT, is an inventory of all the materials held by the Plough Library - books, periodicals, videos/dvds, and CD's. The catalog gives you the call number, circulation status, and location of each item.

Find it on our homepage under Find Books > BUCCAT Library Catalog. 


SEARCH TIPS

Titles
Authors
Subjects
  • Leave out 'a', 'the', 'le', 'la', 'el', 'die', and other articles at the beginning of a title.
  • Just enter the first few words.
  • Capitalization and punctuation are not necessary, except hyphens.

Examples:

  • Enter the surname (last name) first.
  • Capitalization and punctuation do not matter.
  • Use Author search to look for authors, editors, artists, illustrators, translators, corporations, and organizaitons.

The World Chess Federation world chess federation
  • When you search by Subject you are searching a formal set of vocabulary called 'Library of Congress Subject Headings.' Librarians assign Subject Headings to each book describing what the book is about.
  • If you don't know the exact subject heading for your topic, use a keyword search instead.

LOCATE THE ITEM

Each record in the online catalog contains holdings information that tells where the item is located in the library and on the shelves.

Call Number:

Plough Library uses the Dewey Decimal System. Each number in the Dewey Decimal System represents a particular subject.

Status:

Tells if item is available or checked out and other information about availability of item.

Available = Item is on the shelves.
Charged = Item is checked out.
Lost = Item is lost.
