DATABASES

Search the BUCCAT Library Catalog to find encyclopedias and dictionaries in the library's collections--both print and online. Use keywords such as dictionary, glossary, lexicon, or encyclopedia; add a word like psychology, chemistry, or engineering to find subject-specific reference works.

Funk & Wagnall's New World Encyclopedia: Contains over 25,000 encyclopedic entries. Searchable by subject or keywords within the entry.

Gale Virtural Reference Library: Searchable full text of reference books in subjects including business, environment, history, medicine, multicultural studies, religion, and science.

OED Online (Oxford English Dictionary): English language words from the earliest records of written language to the present day. Includes over 2 million dated quotations from English language history literature and records and facts concerning word forms, changes, and etymology.

Oxford Reference Online: 100 language and subject dictionaries and reference works. Includes general reference sources on language, science and medicine, humanities, social sciences. and business and professional topics.

World Book Advanced: General encyclopedia with 26,000+ articles, plus 12,000+ pictures and maps, 100+ videos and animations, and 10,000 sounds (including pronunciations). Includes World Book Dictionary with 248,000 definitions, World Book Atlas with 750 maps, and full text primary source documents, major literary works, and selected recent articles from magazines.

Infotrac databases (such as Academic Onefile) and EBSCOHost databases (such as Academic Search Premier and Business Source Premier) provide machine-generated translations into several languages for articles available in HTML.
