The best starting point for any sort of research, databases are large collections of information which may include citations, abstracts, ebooks, fulltext articles from scholarly journals or magazines, images, multi-media files and more.

Art & Architecture Thesaurus: AATO contains more than 125,000 terms covering “fine art, architecture, decorative arts, archival materials, and material culture” and is more than a thesaurus, including brief definitions and a navigable hierarchical tree. Extensive and still growing, it includes historic and contemporary terms.

Art Babble: source of online videos from museums and art organizations about art and artists. VIDEOS.

Art Deadlines List: Art contests and competitions, grants, scholarships

Artjob.org: Comprehensive listing of career and employment opportunities.

ArtLex: Art Dictionary: Provides over 2600 definitions of terms covering all aspects of art, along with quotations, pronunciation notes, illustrations, and links to related websites.

AskART.com: Information on over 34,000 North American artists, including biographies, books and articles on artists, artwork for

Digital Art Source: Opening the World of Digital Art: Links to sites on different aspects of digital art, organized by category.

Journal of Contemporary Art: Interviews with and projects by contemporary artists.

Archives of American Art: Provides access to the largest collection of documents on the history of visual arts in the United States.

Art in Historical Context: Offers free public access to information added by curators, dealers, artists, writers and others from around the world.

Bibliography of the History of Art: the world's most comprehensive bibliography of scholarly writing on western art, freely available from the Getty.

SmartHistory: Online, interactive art history website; browse by time, style, artist, or theme; includes video files. 

Timeline of Art History: Chronological, geographical, and thematic exploration of history of art from around the world, as illustrated by Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.

  • Art Images for College Teaching: Intended primarily to disseminate images of art and architectural works in the public domain on a free-use basis to all levels of the educational community.
  • Art Project (powered by Google): Google's street view technology lets you virtually enter selected galleries of major world musems where you can see art works as they are displayed. Zoom in to view selected works in incredible detail. Museums currently involved in the project include the Freer, the Frick, MoMA, London's National Gallery, Versailles, the Hermitage, the Tate, the Uffizi, the Metropolitan, the Rijksmuseum, and more.
