The best starting point for any sort of research, databases are large collections of information which may include citations, abstracts, ebooks, fulltext articles from scholarly journals or magazines, images, multi-media files and more.

Bplans.com: Free advice and information for entrepreneurs; includes sample business plans, marketing plans, and a locator for small business development centers in the U.S.

BigCharts.com: From MarketWatch; provides basic and advanced charting tools, current/historic quotes, market/industry data from the U.S., Canadian, and other world exchanges. (Registration required for some access.) 

Biznar: Federated search engine for business resources (beta).

Business Planet: Investigate doing business in other countries; use data from WorldBank databases to aid in analyzing various countries' economies.

Business Plans and Profiles Index: Guide to sample business plans and profiles for specific business types created by staff at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Doing Business in Memphis database: Have the Career Center to generate SIC-based lists of Memphis businesses. Contact Curt Rogers (email crogers@cbu.edu) in the Career Center for assistance. First Tennessee Small Business Center (Memphis Public Library): The Small Business Center at the Memphis Public Library offers links to local and state small business resources and a directory, Where to Go for Small Business Information in Memphis and Shelby County. The list of small business resources can be searched by agency or subject, and entries provide information on type of help offered, any associated costs or requirements, and contacts.

globalEDGE - International Business Statistics Database: Portal to web-based 5000+ resources for global business information; includes industry analyses and an international business blog.

Mid-South Better Business Bureau: Ratings and customer complaint histories for businesses and charities.

Minority Business Development Agency: From the Department of Commerce; provides access to public/private debt and equity financing.

NAICS - North American Industry Classification System: Developed jointly by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide new comparability in statistics about business activity across North America.

SCORE Memphis: Website of the local chapter of the national organization, which provides free assistance to small business owners.

Tennessee Small Business Development Center: Counseling for management and technical business problems. Find locations throughout the State. Includes training and education calendar.

U.S. Census - Business & Industry: Economic census data and economic indicators.

U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA): Information helpful for small businesses: currently available Federal financing and training, and general topics on starting and expanding a small business.

WolframAlpha Money & Finance: Calculate salary equivalents, get current stock data, compare stocks, compute mortgages, convert currencies, and more. (TIP: anywhere you see a >>, you can click on it for more examples.)
