Advancing to the Tennessee state MATHCOUNTS finals to be held on March 20, 2004, at the new Tennessee Engineering Center, located at the Adventure Science Center (f/k/a/ Cumberland Science Museum) in Nashville, Tennessee, will be the first place team from White Station Middle School (Justin Campbell, Jun Song, Troy Wu, Chi Zhang) plus the top four individual competitors not on this team (Shawn Pan, Roger Chu, Yuxin Liu, Jon Tutor).  The Memphis Mathletes will be coached at the state competition by Gary Sharp, coach of the White Station Middle School team.  Winners of the state competition will advance to the national MATHCOUNTS competition May 6-9, 2004, in Washington, DC.  Tennessee will be represented at the national competition by a team consisting of the top four individual scorers at the state competition, coached by the coach of the winning team at the state competition, with an all-expenses-paid trip to the national competition.

Volunteers assisting at this year’s competition were from the Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers, the Memphis Chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers, the Memphis Joint Engineering Council, students and faculty members from Christian Brothers University, the University of Memphis, and Rhodes College, as well as engineers from EnSafe Corporation and Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division.

MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide program designed to answer the problem of declining math skills among U.S. students.  The MATHCOUNTS program targets 7th and 8th graders who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining interest and ability in math.  The Memphis and West Tennessee Regional Mathcounts Competition, and lodging and competition expenses at the Tennessee State Mathcounts Competition, are funded by contributions from the Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers and local corporate sponsors.  Additional details about the Mathcounts program may be found at the national MATHCOUNTS internet web page at http://www.mathcounts.org .

Winning Individuals (Countdown Round / Oral Competition):

(Memphis, Tennessee, February 7, 2004)-- Teams of 7th- and 8th- grade student Mathletes from public, private, and parochial middle schools and junior high schools across West Tennessee competed in the Memphis and West Tennessee regional contest of the national MATHCOUNTS program on February 7, 2004, at the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis.  The MATHCOUNTS regional contest is organized and sponsored annually by the Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers as a part of National Engineering Month, and this year was held in partnership with the University of Memphis.

Teachers and students prepared for this competition since the beginning of this school year.  Students competed individually and as teams in written and fast-paced oral matches.  Subjects included probability, statistics, linear algebra, and polynomials.  First through fourth place individual, team, and oral lightning “Countdown Round” winners received awards, trophies, and prizes.
