Q. What is the difference between the Internet website and the Intranet website? [TOP]
A. CBU basically has two web servers. One is our Internet webserver, and the other is our Intranet webserver. The fundamental difference between the two is nothing more than who can access the pages on the two webservers. The Internet webserver is accessible by anyone on the Internet, anywhere in the world. The Intranet webserver is accessible only from the CBUnet. That is, you must be on campus or dialed into the Internet through CBU's dialup in order to view webpages on the Intranet webserver.
Q. What does the word "Intranet" mean? [TOP]
A. Actually, Merriam-Webster explains it pretty well: "a network operating like the World Wide Web but having access restricted to a limited group of authorized users." CBU's Intranet is a WWW-like webserver that restricts its access by LOCATION. Only those on the CBUnet may access CBU's Intranet.
Q. How do I publish a homepage to CBU's Intranet? [TOP]
A. It's easy! If you know how to publish to CBU's Internet webserver, you're halfway toward publishing on our Intranet! To learn how to publish to the CBU Intranet, read the directions for publishing to the CBU World Wide Web, but use 'Intra_WWW' as the name of the publish directory (instead of WWW).
Q. How do I publish my department's information to the Intranet? [TOP]
A. Publishing departmental information to the Intranet webserver (i.e. http://www3.cbu.edu/department) requires you have permissions to log into the Intranet webserver. Because access to this server is restricted, you must contact the ITS HelpDesk requesting permission to publish departmental information to the Intranet webserver.
Q. Can I host CGI's on my Intranet homepage? [TOP]
A. Yes, you may run CGI's on the Intranet just as you would for your Internet web pages.
Q. Why can't I access the Intranet from off campus? [TOP]
A. Users accessing CBU's Intranet webserver must be on the CBUnet. If you use a local ISP such as BellSouth.net or Time Warner's Road Runner service, the Intranet is not available because you are not accessing the Internet via the CBUnet. The only way to access the Intranet from off campus is to dial into the Internet through CBU's dialup Internet service.
Q. Why can't I access the Intranet from home? [TOP]
A. If you are not dialed into the Internet through CBU's dialup Internet service, the answer to the above question applies here also.
Q. What's the big deal? Why do we have to restrict access to the Intranet? [TOP]
A. Every organization, including Christian Brothers University, maintains information that is very effective when published internally but should never be known to those outside the organization. Access to our Intranet webserver is restricted to meet this need specifically. If you need to publicly post information on the Internet, read the directions for publishing to the CBU World Wide Web.
Q. How can the Intranet be useful to me? [TOP]
A. Those that wish to publish information internal to the University are the people for whom the Intranet was created. This can be anyone from a student wishing to create a homepage viewable only by other students to a faculty member wishing to post assignments or test data online. This may also treat this as a secure 'online bulletin board' for your campus club or organization!
Q. How do I access the Intranet? [TOP]
A. Point your web browser to http://www3.cbu.edu. Remember that you must access the Intranet from the CBUnet.
Q. Does this mean I have to have two homepages now? [TOP]
A. No. You are not required to have an Intranet homepage. You could have an Intranet homepage and not have an Internet homepage. Or, you can create an Intranet homepage that has a simple link to your Internet homepage. CBU does not keep or publish a list of Intranet homepages like it keeps a list of Internet homepages.
Q. Can I edit my Intranet homepage from home or off campus? [TOP]
A. Yes. You can edit your Intranet homepage from any location that allows you to log into your server account. But keep in mind that unless you are on the CBUnet, you will not be able to view your Intranet homepage after you edit it!
Q. Why should I take the time to learn about our Intranet? [TOP]
A. This is a new resource perfect for posting or publishing private information. Some departments on campus are already using it, and others are still adding new content. This may not carry the weight of CBU's Internet website, but it will prove to be a valuable resource for those who are familiar with it.
Q. How can I have my department's information posted in the 'Internal Announcements'? [TOP]
A. If you would like to post information to the Intranet homepage's 'Internal Announcements', contact the HelpDesk by emailing help@cbu.edu. Be sure to include what department you represent and what information you wish to post.
Q. How do I set my web browser to show the Intranet homepage when it starts up? [TOP]

A. This is a good idea, because of the Internal Announcements AND because a list of daily campus events is shown every day on the Intranet homepage.
