Manufacturing Lab

Location:
St. Benilde Hall #104

Faculty Supervisor:
Dr. Paul Shiue

Lab Description:

The manufacturing lab is not only equipped with conventional machining tools such as a manual lathe, mill, drill press, grinders, and bend saws, etc., but also contains a state-or-the-art CNC vertical machining center and CNC lathes. Equipment is utilized by all engineering students for designing, fabrication, and testing their projects. All mechanical engineering students are required to take the manufacturing processes class focusing on the use of equipment and machining processes. This is also where extra-curricular engineering projects are undertaken for companies and competitions such as the Mini Baja and Moonbuggy.

Key Equipment:

The Toshiba EC45N (44 tons) AC servo all-electric injection molding machine is a new addition to the Manufacturing Laboratory. It provides high level of dimensional accuracy and part repeatability with shot size of 1.6 oz. and tie bar (H x V) of 12.6 x 12.6 inches. Key features include: high speed, high cycle molding; total machine system integration; five point clamping mechanism; less stress on injection mechanism; automatic lubrication; wear resistant barrel; INJECTVISOR V21 numerical control system; absolute position sensing; Six Sigma capability. The all-electric machine also provides greater repeatability, great energy efficiency, and quieter & cleaner operation. This machine enhances the hands-on experiences in Manufacturing Processes (ME201), Intermediate Manufacturing (ME435), and projects in other classes.

The Fadal VMC-15 Vertical Machining Center is a 15 hp CNC machining center with 5-axis capability, maximum spindle speed of 7500 rpm, 20"x16"x16" work area, and 21 tool stations.

The Romi M-17 Combination Lathes are extremely versatile machines that can be used for machining many different types of parts. They offer the user superior productivity and precision. The interactive numerical control of the M-Series provides the ease of operation of an engine lathe with the productivity of a CNC lathe. These features are combined with high rates of metal removal, rapid positioning, and excellent machining precision. The M-17 equips with GE-Fanuc control Series 21i-T with Manual Guide software system, automatic lubrication system with line filter, 8 - station disk type automatic turret, electrically driven, etc.
