Mother Teresa awarded the Bishop Carroll T. Dozier
Award for Peace and Justice

Two letters from Mother Teresa about the award
Mother Teresa, the late internationally renowned religious leader,
was named recipient of the Bishop Carroll T. Dozier Award for Peace
and Justice in 1989. Sister M. Sabita, Regional Supervisor of the
Memphis Community of the Missionaries of Charity, accepted the award
for Mother Teresa at the CBC College Theatre on April 12, 1989.
Mother Teresa, 87, died of a heart attack on September 5, 1997
in Calcutta. She had been in failing health for several years prior
to her death.
The award honors individuals or organizations who demonstrate leadership
by example in the practice and promotion of peace and justice in
the world. Mother Teresa was chosen to receive this award for her
single-minded dedication of service to the "poorest of the
poor" and to those rejecteed by the larger society of humankind.
The Missionaries of Charity have established a mission in Memphis
to assist battered and abused women and children. Although Mother
Teresa did not attend the award ceremony, she was in Memphis on
June 4, 1989, to dedicate the Memphis mission and met with Brother
Theodore Drahmann, F.S.C., then president of Christian Brothers
College.
