CBU Policy on Plagiarism

As stated in Section 5 of The Compass (Student Handbook):

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is a serious form of academic misconduct and will not be tolerated. Plagiarism is using the work of others and offering it as one's own. This includes the use of another's ideas or writings without proper acknowledgment, submitting a paper written by another, or submitting an examination or assignment containing work copied from someone else.

A faculty member will take disciplinary action when plagiarism is discerned. Disciplinary action may take the form of a warning or the assigning of a failing grade for the assignment, examination, or entire course. The faculty member may recommend to the Vice President for Academic Affairs that the student be expelled.

The following procedures will be followed in cases of plagiarism:

After cheating/plagiarism is discerned, the faculty member should immediately inform the student of the alleged charge. Plagiarism must be discerned, not merely suspected. If at all possible, evidence should be available.

The faculty member must, prior to the next class meeting, inform in writing the student, student's advisor, the faculty member's department head, the dean of the school and the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the charges against the student and any disciplinary action taken against him or her.

If the student wishes to appeal the disciplinary action, he or she:
1. Must notify in writing the faculty member and each of the persons listed in step 2 within 7 days after the written notification.
2. May attend classes while the appeal is in process.
The Vice President for Academic Affairs will notify the chairperson of the Grade Appeals Committee who will convene the committee for the hearing within 7 days of the notification by the Vice President.

The Grade Appeals Committee will follow the normal hearing procedure and immediately following the hearing, notify in writing the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the decision. The Vice President will notify in writing the student, the student's advisor, the faculty member, the department head, and the dean of the school.

If the decision is a failing course grade, the student may not attend class meetings or take the final examination.

Multiple infractions may result in permanent expulsion from the University by the Vice President for Academic Affairs. Any appeal of expulsion shall be made to the President of the University, but his review is limited to insuring that fundamental fairness guidelines have been met. If fundamental fairness guidelines have not been met, the President can refer the case back to the Vice President for Academic Affairs to insure that the guidelines are met.
