National Panhellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council is the national governing and coordinating council for the nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities, often referred to as the Divine Nine:

  • Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
  • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
  • Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
  • Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
  • Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc.
  • Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.
  • Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
  • Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
  • Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

The Christian Brothers University NPHC has seven of the nine organizations: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.; and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. The NPHC fraternities include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.; and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.

At Christian Brothers University, the NPHC organizations are committed to the growth and development of their members and to promoting community service, academic excellence, and brotherhood and sisterhood. NPHC is also focused on providing a variety of programs designed to enrich the cultural experience of CBU students.

NPHC History

The National Pan-Hellenic Council was formed on May 10, 1930 at Howard University in Washington, DC. The forming organizations charter members included: Omega Psi Phi and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternities, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Phi Beta Sororities. In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternities joined the Council. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority joined in 1937 and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity completed the list of member organizations in 1997.

NPHC Intake

The CBU National Pan-Hellenic Governing Council (NPHC) typically admits new members through a process called Membership Intake. All NPHC chapters determine their own recruitment period which can change from year to year. Organizations conducting intake will typically host informational sessions to create a foundation for prospective members to learn about specific membership requirements, chapter policies, and financial cost. 

Membership Requirements

To be elgible to join a NPHC organization, you should: 

  • Have at least 12 or more credit hours at Christian Brothers University
  • Have a minimum college GPA of 2.5
  • Meet individual chapter requirements

Students interested in joining a NPHC organization should visit the chapter's national website regarding specific membership requirements.
