(Memphis)—Christian Brothers University will offer a degree in biomedical sciences beginning Fall 2006. The new degree, offered within the biology department, is designed particularly for students interested in medicine and veterinary medicine.
“This program is more focused on medicine than the traditional biology degree,” said Dr. Johnny Holmes, dean of sciences. “It has all of the requirements of a regular biology degree but with most of the biology and chemistry electives specified.”
Students also take advantage of mentored research courses that make a CBU biology degree distinctive as well as exceptional internships at various facilities including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Memphis Zoo. Courses included in the biomedical degree program are: vertebrate embryology, vertebrate physiology, microbiology, parasitology, animal histology, immunology and biochemistry.
“With interest in medical fields so high, and since CBU has traditionally offered biology and chemistry courses that students need for the field, it was only natural for us to put together a degree in this area,” said Holmes. More than 85% of CBU students who apply to medical school and other professional programs are accepted. FOr more information, call the CBU admissons office at 901-321-3205. ##
