CBU Says Farewell to Brother Julius Timothy McNary

Brother Julius Timothy McNary, FSC, a member of the Christian Brothers University (CBU) staff since 1977, and teacher/coach at Christian Brothers College (CBC) from 1949-1952, died suddenly on Thursday, July, 19, while being treated in the emergency room at St. Francis Hospital for an aneurysm.

Brother Timothy, 85, was in his 67th year as a Christian Brother, having joined the Christian Brothers in 1940. He is survived by a sister, Margaret Bachner of Ft. Myers, FL and a brother, James (Norma) of Sun City West, AZ, many nieces and nephews and his Christian Brothers Community at Lambert Hall on the CBU campus.

Brother Timothy was born in Ellendale, ND but claimed St. Paul, MN as his home for most of his school days. Before coming to Memphis, Brother Timothy taught in Chicago and then administered schools in Quincy, IL; Omaha, NE; and Kansas City, MO. He also was a teacher and headmaster at St. John’s International School in Waterloo, Belgium.

Brother Timothy will be remembered more for the lives he touched than for the numerous places where he taught. He truly was loved and respected by his many students and faculty/staff members for his caring style, his passionate concern for people who needed help, his drive for excellence and for his professionalism in any area to which he was assigned.

Among his assignments at CBU were the positions of Career Counselor, Placement Director, and Director of International Admissions. In this latter responsibility, he toured the Mid- and Far East in search of students, and when they arrived on campus he became their Father/Brother figure, one who mentored them in their adjustment to this new culture.

From his earlier days at CBC, he is fondly remembered as a football, basketball and baseball coach on the freshman level. Many of his former players still gather to share their stories about “Brother Tim,” a great influence in their young lives.

A memorial service for Brother Timothy will be held at a later date. His body has been bequeathed to the University of Tennessee School of Medicine. At the request of Brother Timothy, memorials may be sent to the McNary International Student Scholarship Endowment Fund at CBU.
