Christian Brothers University (CBU) will honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. by hosting an oratorical contest and a celebration of King’s life with guest speaker, Dr. Stacy Spencer. These events will be held January 14 and 15 in the Spain Auditorium on the CBU campus.
On Thursday, January 15 at 1:00 p.m., Dr. Stacy Spencer will present a lecture about whether, as Americans, we have arrived at the realization of the “Dream” for which Dr. King is best known. He will postulate questions such as “How far are we from this goal?” and “Where do we go from here?” He will focus on this concept while taking into consideration the recent election of the first African-American U.S. President.
Dr. Spencer is Senior Pastor of New Direction Christian Church, where he continues to expand his ministry, including his evangelism to people who have not had the opportunity to hear the Word. His ministry also includes the creation of a Hispanic congregation, Nueva Direccion. Dr. Spencer is the Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Power Center Community Development and is beginning his sixth year on the Board of Directors at the Civil Rights Museum.
The CBU Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Oratorical Contest will be held January 14 at 6:30 p.m. Students in the 5th and 6th grades from Idlewild Elementary, Holy Names, and Blessed Sacrament will give a 3-5 minute speech on the topic “I Have a Dream: Have We Reached the Mountain Top.” The winning speech will be presented at the January 15 celebration. These events are free and open to the public.
