Memphis – Burton Bridges, Christian Brothers University (CBU) senior Business Administration major, was named by Delta Sigma Pi as the Mr. & Mrs. Sidney A. Sparks Collegian of the Year for 2009. Nominated by his peers, Bridges received the most prestigious award bestowed by the fraternity.
The International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi is a co-educational professional business fraternity. The CBU Chapter, Epsilon Psi, was founded in 1964. Dr. Robert Brittingham, CBU business professor and a founding member of the chapter, is the faculty advisor. In 2008, the CBU chapter was awarded the National Most Improved Collegiate Chapter Award.
Bridges was initially awarded the Mid-South Regional Collegian Award. Subsequently, he was selected as the Southern Provincial Collegian of the Year from six regional winners. His final recognition as National Collegian of the Year, places him among the elite of more than 190 active collegiate chapters nationwide.
While the award began in 1971, Bridges is only the second national recipient from the Southern Province. As Collegian of the Year, he sees his involvement in Delta Sigma Pi as one of the best and most rewarding experiences in his life. He looks forward to his duties, stating, “I am ecstatic to be named the 2009 National Collegian of the Year and will earnestly represent the collegiate interests as a member of the Board of Directors.”
The student chosen as National Collegian of the Year exemplifies values of Delta Sigma Pi such as leadership, commitment, professional development, dependability, honesty and integrity. Bridges will serve as a voting member of Delta Sigma Pi’s Board of Directors for a two-year term and becomes eligible for a $5,000 scholarship. He will also address the fraternity at the national Grand Chapter Congress in Washington, D.C. in August. ###
