Leigh Anne Tuohy to Deliver CBU Commencement Address

Leigh Anne Tuohy, the Memphis mother who served as the inspiration for the Academy Award-winning movie, The Blind Side, will present the 2010 Commencement Address to more than 400 Christian Brothers University (CBU) undergraduate and graduate students during the Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 14, 4:00 p.m. at the Desoto Civic Center.

Tuohy is the strong willed Southern woman, who with her husband, Sean, and their children, Sean Jr. and Collins, adopted Michael Oher, a homeless inner city Memphis teenager. Through the family’s instant acceptance and desire to help, Oher went on to become an offensive tackle with the Baltimore Ravens.

By overcoming their preconceived ideas and opening their home, and ultimately their hearts, the Tuohys gained an appreciation for others less fortunate than themselves. They realized that by meeting the needs of one individual they could make a difference. The entire family is now outspoken about the need to help others, works diligently to further the message of reaching out to those in need, and encourages everyone who can to make a difference.

Dr. John Smarrelli Jr., CBU President, notes, “Ms. Tuohy embodies the CBU mission of Faith, Service and Community. Her unselfish actions are evidence that one person can make a difference, and we are extremely honored to have her as this year’s Commencement speaker.”

For her commitment to the less fortunate and ongoing quest to recruit others to make a difference, Tuohy will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University during its Commencement Ceremony.

Prior to Commencement, the CBU Baccalaureate Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, May 13, at 7:00 p.m. in Canale Arena on the CBU campus. Dr. Gordon Kraus, Director of Haiti Medical Mission of Memphis is the featured speaker.

The University grants the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Science and Mathematics, Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education, Master of Science in Educational Leadership, Master of Arts in Executive Leadership, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Engineering Management.
