“Energy Foolishness to Energy Independence.”
Memphis- Joe Shuster, author of Beyond Fossil Fools, The Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040, will be the keynote speaker at the Fall 2011 M.L. Seidman Town Hall Lecture at Christian Brothers University (CBU) on Thursday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Spain Auditorium, Buckman Hall. Shuster will address the topic “Energy Foolishness to Energy Independence.”
A chemical engineer for more than 50 years, Shuster co-founded Minnesota Valley Engineering (MVE), the world’s leading manufacturer of high-technology cryogenic equipment used in industry, agricul¬ture, transportation, and medicine. MVE designed and manufactured equipment for hydrogen handling, enhanced oil recovery systems, and transportation fuel systems. Shuster further founded Teltech, a science and engineering consulting firm, and subsequently, founded or co-founded seven other technically based companies,
Shuster accurately predicted the oil embargo of 1973 in an energy alert paper he wrote for the U.S. Congress. He also testified before Congress in support of a national technology transfer program. Possibly his most significant contribution to our society is his book, Beyond Fossil Fools, The Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040, which is the culmination of his entrepreneurial journey. For the past 35 years, Shuster has been sounding the alarm about our unhealthy reliance on fossil fuels and the energy foolishness inherent in our unmitigated use of such fuels.
Shuster has served on the Board of Directors of over 20 businesses, organizations and international firms many addressing energy–related issues. He has lectured often and widely, and received numerous professional and civic awards including the University of Minnesota Founder’s Award, the Minnesota High Tech Association President’s Award, the Beatrice Food Company’s Hall of Fame Award for Management and recently the Evans Scholarship Distinguished Achievement Award. Shuster earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.
The M.L Seidman Memorial Town Hall Series was established by Mr. and Mrs. P.K. Seidman in memory of Mr. M.L. Seidman, founder of an international accounting firm who maintained an active interest in public issues. This series of lectures is scheduled every year in light of current public issues. The town hall forum format encourages the active participation of students, faculty and members of the Memphis community.
